Many of my friends were surprised when I decided to put up a new business for online English center. I told them, “It’s too soon to call it a business, considering its relatively small-scale investment.” Since they have known me to run for 20 years a manufacturing business which I established myself, everyone was surprised with the sudden change. I didn’t have to turn my back on my manufacturing business; through the years, it has matured with a good team and a complete system. So I can give more time and energy to this new business.

I believe I’m already a “well-seasoned business manager”… even better than 20 years ago, equipped with years of training and experience. This time, I would like to enjoy the process of establishing a new business, to see it grow and flourish in the succeeding years.

I’ve experienced how hard it was not to have spoken English well. During my MBA study at an American Ivy League School, I couldn’t fully understand my lessons in class. Due to the language gap, I could not exchange ideas well with my classmates, nor clearly express my thoughts in Case Studies. Despite the good environment I was in, I didn’t get the best of what my school offered due to the deficiency in my spoken English. Therefore, one of my motivations in putting up this new business is to help other students not to have the similar experience I had during my stay there.

English is one of the official languages in the Philippines. Even court proceedings are all in English. One proof that there are plenty of good English speakers in supply are Call Center companies booming in this country.

But one cannot teach English just because he can speak the language. Even if one is a native speaker, or an American, does not mean that he or she can already teach English. No, that is a wrong perception. This is the reason why I want to implement the Quality Control System, which is commonly used in the manufacturing industry, in this new business. We do not only hire experienced English teachers; everyone of them has to undergo rigorous phases of training to meet international teaching standards. In addition to the professional skills and knowledge, Filipinos by nature are kind and patient, which make them the most outstanding teachers. As one of my aspirations for my business, I would like to bring good Filipino teachers into the international platforms and let them play their important roles.

Through the use of modern technology, online English learning can save us time and energy of traveling. Studying online English can become a good daily habit for the students. Based on most people’s experiences, we have spent a lot of time and money studying English but most of us weren’t able to meet our goals. Whenever we encounter foreigners, we can not communicate with them very well. It is not because we didn’t study English diligently but we lack practice and the experience in an English speaking environment. My goal is to create such an environment where you can study with the least expense and maximum result. I believe we can provide a lot of people with good quality and inexpensive products, which is most needed in this market.

I can’t guarantee that I’ll keep this education business for a hundred years, but I know I can keep this going for 10 years, 20 years and even longer. I admit that the fundamental goal of all businesses is to make profits. I am willing to sacrifice the short-term profit, in exchange for the long-term satisfaction in quality and social responsibility.
